Designer of cheeky clay creations, May Whiston, is a joy to behold.
Like many of our budding artists this year, May's creations sprouted from the 2020 lockdown. Her time alone with her new-born baby amidst the pandemic encouraged her to begin creating with clay, moulding dreamy creations.
May told The Knot:
"My son was born a couple of weeks before lockdown. I spent the long, lonesome days at home sat breastfeeding him while watching the birds through the window, caring for our eclectic selection of pets and often reflecting back on the strain that his arrival had taken on both my physical and mental health, especially during a time of such uncertainty.
In between my commissioned animal sculptures, I soon found little bits of bodies rising up and out of the odd pile of scrap clay. As the weeks passed and my son grew, these turned in to breast shaped milestones in various colours to commemorate time spent feeding him.
I began creating these for other women too, along with further cheeky sculptures celebrating the boobs, bums, stretch marks and scars accumulated throughout our lives. On especially lonely days I would look at these in my window and be reminded that though I was alone with my thoughts at home, my journey was not a solitary one.
Ultimately I hope that my work makes people smile & celebrate the uniqueness of each individual form"
May's work is cute and cheeky, and brings some relief and light in an otherwise difficult time. The way that she has transformed hardship into gorgeous creations is truly inspiring, and we cannot wait to see more from Bits n Boobs!
